Thousands have taken to London to demand that the government takes action against climate change alongside the Extinction Rebellion movement.

The city has been brought to a standstill as peaceful protestors occupied several sites around London claiming they will not leave until their demands are listened to.

Wendy Cox, 60, a member of Extinction  Rebellion said: “Our group recognises the government are not doing enough about climate change.

“We are asking for three things- the government to tell us the truth about climate change, a pledge to become carbon neutral by 2025 and for the government to create and be led by a citizens assembly on climate change to create solutions moving forward.

“Until our demands are listened to by politicians we will be staying here.”

Hundreds have been arrested so far in the mass disruptions where roads have been blocked causing issues for transport and local businesses.

Danny Smith, 50, a taxi driver in London said: “The protests have made my life intolerable as I drive a black Cab and have to navigate around the city.”

The protests have come just months after the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a report saying we have 12 years to limit a climate change catastrophe.

James Copper, 67, who is part of the Extinction Rebellion protests said: “Exile are taking non violent direct action and many of us have been on courses in case we are arrested.

“Our protests may be annoying and inconvenient for some, but it is vital we bring attention to the issue of climate change.”
